Volunteer
Opportunities
Washington
citizens can serve the community in many ways.
By
volunteering to serve on a city board or commission, you can help make decisions
that make Washington a better place in which to live. Washington’s mayor and city council rely on the direct input and
feedback provided by the citizens who volunteer to serve on its advisory boards
and commissions.
The
boards and commissions include the Planning Commission, the Board of Zoning
Appeals, the Economic Development Commission, the Glendale Cemetery Board of
Managers and the Board of Police Commissioners. Click here to learn about the
responsibilities of each board and commission. If you’re interested in serving on an advisory board
or commission, please submit a letter of interest and a brief resume to Carol
Moss, City Clerk by mail at 115 W. Jefferson Street, Washington, IL 61571
or by email cmoss@ci.washington.il.us.
While the positions are unpaid, the time commitment is minimal (generally
one meeting per month, usually in the evening). We seek individuals who are highly motivated with a willingness to learn
and act in the best interest of the community.
The Police Department, Fire Department, and Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) are also seeking out volunteer members. If you are interested in becoming a volunteer auxiliary police officer, contact Police Chief Jim Kuchenbecker (444-2313). The Washington Fire Department, an independent, not-for-profit corporation under contract with the City, relies on its volunteer members in its service to the community. Contact the Fire Chief at the Fire Station (444-2511) for information about becoming a volunteer firefighter. You may also visit their website at www.wfd.dst.il.us for more information. The Emergency Services and Disaster Agency (ESDA) is a municipal agency comprised of volunteers that provide additional manpower and resources for public safety. Contact the Police Department at (444-2313) for information about becoming a volunteer.
