ABOUT THE GIS MAPPING SYSTEM
The City of Washington Geographic Information System (GIS) is used not only to maintain community-wide maps, but is also used for daily planning, zoning, code enforcement, engineering, economic development, and other activities across multiple departments.
With help from the Tri-County Regional Planning Commission in Peoria, the City obtained digital base mapping from a third party vendor in late 1999 for all of the City’s corporate limits as well as the majority of it’s planning jurisdiction.
City staff continues to maintain and add information to the GIS. Recently, Public Services has begun systematic mapping of streets, sanitary sewer, water, and storm sewer systems. This mapping has recently been approached in the field by the use of global positioning systems (GPS) equipment.
